Your phone can have a bedtime mode and a morning mode—without making you hunt through Settings twice a day. With one NFC zone on TapNest, you can build a simple toggle: tap before bed to turn on Sleep Focus and switch your iPhone to grayscale, then tap the same spot in the morning to turn Sleep Focus off and restore color.
Important: TapNest provides the NFC tap point. Your iPhone and the Shortcuts app perform the Focus and Color Filter actions. TapNest does not change those settings by itself.
Why combine Sleep Focus and grayscale?
Sleep Focus can reduce interruptions and keep your bedtime Home Screen and notifications quieter. Grayscale removes the bright app colors that can make the screen feel visually busy or tempting to keep scrolling. This is a routine preference, not a promise to improve sleep—but it can create a clearer “the day is over” signal.
Before building the shortcut, set the Color Filter you want your iPhone to use:
- Open Settings.
- Go to Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Color Filters.
- Choose Grayscale.
You only need to choose Grayscale once. The routine will then turn that Color Filter on or off. Apple notes that Color Filters can change how photos and videos look, which is why this toggle restores full color in the morning. See Apple’s Color Filters guide.
The natural iOS 27 prompt
If your iPhone supports Apple Intelligence and the Shortcuts app shows the natural-language shortcut builder, keep the request direct. Tell it what the NFC tag is for and what should happen in both states:
Use this NFC tag as my bedtime switch. If Sleep Focus is off, turn it on and make my screen black and white. If Sleep Focus is already on, turn it off and bring the color back. Run it without asking me anything.
This wording matters. “If Sleep Focus is off” and “if Sleep Focus is already on” tell Shortcut AI that the same TapNest zone should work in both directions. “Run it without asking me anything” helps prevent an extra menu or confirmation from interrupting the routine.
Set it up with Apple Intelligence
- Open the Shortcuts app and start the iOS 27 natural-language or Describe a Shortcut flow.
- Paste or say the prompt above.
- When prompted, scan the TapNest NFC zone you want to use for bedtime.
- Review the generated logic. The “night” branch should turn on Sleep Focus and Color Filters; the “morning” branch should turn both off.
- Test the same NFC zone twice—once while Sleep Focus is off, and once while it is on.
Apple Intelligence availability depends on your iPhone model, system version, language, region, and settings. Shortcut AI may also ask a follow-up question or choose a slightly different action. Review and test the generated routine rather than assuming it is finished. If you do not see the natural-language option, use the manual method below.
Classic manual setup for older iOS versions
You can build the same TapNest sleep toggle on iOS 27 without Apple Intelligence, or on earlier iOS versions, using a standard NFC Personal Automation.
- Open Shortcuts > Automation and create a new Personal Automation.
- Select NFC, then scan one of TapNest’s three NFC tap zones.
- Add an action that checks the current Focus mode.
- Add an If condition:
- If Sleep Focus is active, turn Sleep Focus off and turn Color Filters off.
- Otherwise, turn Sleep Focus on and turn Color Filters on.
- Choose the option that allows the NFC automation to run automatically, if it is available on your version of iOS.
- Test the zone twice to confirm it toggles both settings in the correct direction.
Action names and screens can vary slightly by iOS version. If your version does not expose the current Focus state in the exact way described, create two separate actions or automations and use the option available on your device. The goal is the same: a night state with Sleep Focus and Grayscale on, and a morning state with both off.
What to check if the toggle behaves strangely
- It always turns the same state on: make sure the routine checks whether Sleep Focus is already active before choosing a branch.
- It asks you to pick an option: remove any “Choose from Menu” action and tell Shortcut AI to run without asking.
- The screen changes color but Focus does not: open the Focus action and confirm that Sleep is selected.
- The screen does not become grayscale: return to Accessibility settings and confirm that Grayscale is the selected Color Filter.
- The NFC tap is inconsistent: move the top of your iPhone slowly across the selected TapNest zone and keep it there briefly.
Where this routine fits on TapNest
TapNest has three customizable NFC tap zones, so the sleep toggle can live beside other bathroom routines. For example, one zone can handle your nighttime toggle, another can start a morning playlist and timer, and the third can open a skincare checklist or supported app.
Mount TapNest on a clean, smooth, non-porous surface such as a bathroom mirror or glossy tile. Its 3M double-sided tape installs without drilling. Keep both TapNest and your phone away from direct running water; neither this guide nor the product makes a waterproof claim.
MagSafe-compatible iPhones and MagSafe-compatible cases work best with the magnetic dock. Other phones may need a compatible magnetic ring.
One tap at night, one tap in the morning
The useful part of this NFC shortcut is not simply turning on grayscale. It is giving the same physical tap point two jobs, depending on your current state. At night, the screen becomes quieter and Sleep Focus turns on. In the morning, the same tap returns your iPhone to its normal look.
